Journaling can be extremely therapeutic and personal, making it a great self-care activity. While there are tons of creative prompts out there, I wanted to share some prompts that would specifically impact your self-care routine and encourage healthy coping mechanisms and mindsets! Here are my top 5 journaling prompts for self-care:
PS: I used photos of my journal, but be sure to get creative, make these your own, and look online for inspiration! It’s okay if your journal doesn’t look perfect- mine certainly doesn’t- but the important thing is that you get something out of it!
Favorite self-care activities
This one is pretty basic but is an absolute essential. Sometimes on days when I feel anxious or down it isn’t that I don’t want to take some time for myself, it’s just I don’t automatically think of self-care activities I could do in the moment when I’m feeling that way- I’m sure some of you can relate! Creating a list of your favorite self-care activities, including ones you’d like to try in the future, sets you up for future success when you aren’t sure what to do, need a mental health day, or have some extra time on your hands.
“It’s me, [your name]!”
Think about what makes you, you! Then add some doodles of course. This prompt would make a fun first page in a journal or anywhere that needs a bit more color. Add your favorite places, activities, music, food, movies- whatever you want. Hopefully, this prompt is not only entertaining and takes your mind off things while you do it, but also reminds you that you are more than your ED and/or that you are unique and wonderful!
10 things you love about yourself
Self-love is self-care! Give yourself some much-needed appreciation and love by writing down what you love about yourself. Ideally, your list will include both physical and personality traits! It’s easy to be negative or harsh towards ourselves, but this prompt breaks the cycle and adds positivity and gratitude back into your personal mental space.
Daydreaming is a classic way to have some fun, think outside of the box, and dream big. Think about what things, people, and places would be in your dream life and write them down! You can do more of a chart as I did or get creative and add doodles, lists, or whatever else feels right. I like to put mine on a page adjacent to a goals page so I can feel inspired, but this prompt is also cool because you might find that a lot of things in your “dream life” are things you already have!
Words are powerful things! They can be a tool for peace, motivation, happiness, and more. Tucking your favorite quote or mantra into your journal is not only a nice personal touch but also can be used as a tool you look at when you’re feeling down/stressed/triggered, too!
